An acne diet sounds like a wonderful idea. We’ve all heard that chocolate gives you pimples. We almost all have. So it doesn’t seem so crazy that by watching what you eat could prevent a break out.
However, an acne diet can be hard to create for a large number of people. It is highly personal and based on your body’s unique responses to food. There are guidelines, but each individual’s progress will mostly be trial and error. Check your skin thoroughly every day. Write a journal. You could even take pictures a few times a week. If and when your skin clears, stick to the diet that you were using at that time.
The following guidelines can help get you started on an acne diet:
1. Take in a lot more protein. Some dermatologists even believe that protein intake is connected to having clear skin. This is because protein contains an enzyme that limits the production of oil. Oily skin tends to be more prone to breakouts.
2. Carbohydrates are not good. Do not take all carbs out of your diet. However you should keep them around 40 percent of your diet. This is because carbohydrates have compounds in them that can stimulate oil production. This is why so many people think that junk food causes acne. In reality, junk food is high in carbs.
3. Green tea is a must. Drinking the real stuff is the best. The kind of green tea that you brew is the best kind. But, if you really don’t like it, the natural green tea drinks will work. Green tea holds back androgen production. Breakouts have been known to be caused by a hormone called androgen.
4. Limit your total intake of salt. Iodine is usually found in salt. This is the reason we usually call table salt “iodized salt.” Of course for some people with acne, iodine can cause big breakouts.
While watching what you eat, you should also be very careful with what you put on your face. If you have acne you are probably already more aware than most people of the ingredients in your beauty products. You should only use moisturizers without oil and natural and organic skin care products. Products containing natural ingredients will least likely irritate your skin. Mineral makeups are a good investment, if you wear makeup. Many dermatologists today believe that mineral makeup can really reduce breakouts and increase the results of your acne diet.
